I have placed pictures from the East Garden of the Imperial Palace in their own gallery.

Overcast
The bright overcast acted like a giant diffuser, something I appreciated when I didn't need to include the sky in the picture. But for this picture, taken late in the day, blue skies would have been ideal. I nearly came back early the next morning when the skies were clear and beautiful, but I didn't have much time before having to leave for America, and I wanted to spend some time at Ueno Park.
Something for next time. |

Stone and Water
A simple image of stone and water, taken by one of the large stone walls surrounding the palace, with a moat of water below. The massive rocks in the wall are supplemented by smaller rocks that fill in the gaps. I suspect the thin gray line at the waterline is the high level the water reaches after the heaviest rains.

Water
These fountains are part of a complex of water features that sit next to the Imperial Palace grounds.

Little Women
I wanted to remind myself of just how large these gates are, so I waited until these three women walked under the gate and were dwarfed by the massive structure.

The Original Doggy Door
I'm not sure of the exact purpose of this little door in the massive gates, but I assume it wasn't to let out pets for exercise, but to allow a small number of people to crouch down and exit single file without risking the entire compound by opening the gates.

Guardhouse
A guard at the imperial palace. Unfortunately I couldn't get an angle without the concrete structure in front.

Early Bloomer
At last, a cherry tree in bloom! I didn't want to go home without seeing the blossoms, so this early bloomer on the grounds of the palace were a welcome find.
